Wollumbin Guide to using databases from RTRL
Don’t just rely
on GOOGLE !
Use these for
quick and
reliable data
and points of
view .
 Are you looking for reliable facts or figures?
 Do you want more recent research?
 Do you want to compare and contrast different points of view... to
understand differences of opinion?
 Do you need to evaluate points of view to reach your own
conclusions?
Don’t just GOOGLE it!
Search for reliable information in
Britannica or these databases.
This is a WHS Guide to using the databases. See the
RTRL eResources presentation for descriptions to help
choose the databases.
 Choose the database or
study tool from the RTRL
lists.
 This takes you to the
EBSCO Host login screen.
 Login with your RTRL
Library membership or e-
membership number.
 The Search screen goes to
your chosen database,
but you can choose
others as you go.
The EBBSCO screen shows your first
choice, e.g. Australia and New
Zealand Reference Centre
Choose your Basic or Advanced
Search option
but you can include more databases
from the Choose Databases prompt
– even selecting ALL if you wish, but
this will slow your result find.
 Search using keywords and
use Advance options to
choose types of resources
etc.
 Keywords in different Fields
 Search Modes and
Expanders e.g. Boolean
/Phrase
 Result Limits by type of
resource e.g. images
 + Any Special Limiters for
specific Databases as
selected ( as you scroll down
this screen, i.e. below this
screenshot)
1. You can limit to
full text articles
(rather than
Abstracts)
2. Limit to quick
review image or
go to Reviewed
Academic
articles
3. Choose Sources
e.g. news or
Academic
journals
4. Check related
Subject
Thesaurus
terms
5. Choose by
Publisher …
6. Choose by Date
Range…
7. … and more
Click on a resource title
to bring up details and
your options e.g.
• read an abstract
(summary) or full text.
This is useful for
academic articles.
• open the resource as a
PDF or HTML
document
• have it read to you, if
offered, even
translated.
• link to an online news
report e.g. text and
images.
…and get citation details for your own bibliographic records. See
more action options above here too, including Note-making.
