A tool to achieve project tasks helping streamlining of
supply Chain.
Aniruddha Kulkarni

The critical path is composed of those tasks whose finish dates affect the finish date of the overall project.
In other words, if a critical task finishes late, the project will likely finish late also, unless you are able to adjust to the delay and
make up time elsewhere.
When you control critical elements of the construction process, you will get more reliable results. Clearly, with the added
controls that are part of a complete contraction quality control plan, you’ll have fewer problems to fix and higher levels of
quality from start to finish.
A critical path analysis is a diagrammatical representation of what needs to be done and when. Timescales and costs can be applied to each
activity and resource.“
What is Critical Path Method (CPM)
CPM Deliverables
• Calculates the longest path of planned activities to the end of the project
• The earliest and latest that each activity can start and finish without making the project longer
• Determines “critical” activities (on the longest path)
• Prioritize activities for the effective management and to shorten the planned critical path of a project

Critical Path Method- Definitions
Float (slack) - amount of time that a task can be delayed without causing a delay to:
-subsequent tasks (free float)
-project completion date (total float)
Critical path is the sequence of activities which add up to the longest overall duration. It is the shortest time possible to
complete the project. Any delay of an activity on the critical path directly impacts the planned project completion date (there
is no float on the critical path). A project can have several, parallel, near critical paths. An additional parallel path through the
network with the total durations shorter than the critical path is called a sub-critical or non-critical path.
Critical activity – activity with zero float
Nodes- Late finish time (LF) is the latest time that an activity may finish without delaying the entire project .
Total Float= Late Start - Early Start OR Late Finish-Early Finish

Note: Microsoft Project is the commonly used software for Critical Path Analysis. Its benefits are that it is widely used and available, so many
people will understand how to use it and the resulting outputs. It is also comprehensive and can be used to create many types of models,
including ( Program Evaluation and Review Technique)PERT, activity-on-node, and Gantt charts.
