This document is a short story about a boy named Alfie who lives with his dysfunctional parents. On a winter morning, Alfie witnesses an argument between his parents while getting ready to go to his grandmother's house. When his father leaves, Alfie hears more fighting and glass breaking from his mother. Scared, Alfie tries to drive away in his mother's car to escape but is stopped by his father who has returned to intervene.

- 2. SCENE INT. LIVING ROOM – MORNING A middle class family home on a cold winters morning. A COUPLE in their late thirties are sitting on a plush sofa, wrapped in a blanket, with their son in between them. The son, ALFIE, aged 7, is holding the DAD’s hand. He is playing around with it measuring his fingers against his father’s and pulling gently on his skin. Alfie looks down and sees his MUM’s hand next to him. He reaches for his mum’s hand and tries to bring it towards the dad’s but the mum pulls away. She gets up and pours herself another glass of wine from a half empty bottle. The dad and Alfie watch the mum for a while before both turning back to the television. As the trailers to the cartoon start rolling Alfie jumps up. ALFIE I want to be a space ranger like Buzz! Alfie starts zooming up and down the room with his arms spread open. The dad chuckles as he folds up the blanket. He is casually dressed in jeans and a T- shirt. MUM Stop that now! You’re giving me a headache. Alfie continues zooming up and down the room sticking his tongue out in a playful manner. His mum gets up and grabs Alfie’s wrist forcing him to stop and pulling him back a little. Alfie looks scared and squirms under his mum’s grasp. ALFIE Ouch! Mum your hurting me
- 3. His mum lets go of his wrist and they both look at his red wrist DAD Come on, up you go its time to get dressed we’re going to Nanny’s house for lunch. Alfie nods and looks at his mum. She sits back down at the table and goes back to her drink. Alfie takes the blanket from the side. SCENE INT. HALLWAY – MORNING Alfie shuffles up the stairs slowly. DAD Your clothes are on your bed. You’ve got ten minutes then we’re leaving. Alfie stops half way up and listens in as his dad starts speaking to his mum in a soft but serious manner. He looks back briefly then continues to walk upstairs. SCENE INT. BEDROOM- MORNING Alfie walks into his room and throws the blanket on the bed next to his clothes. He looks at them briefly then starts pulling toys out of his toy box. As an argument starts downstairs Alfie gets up and closes his door. He sits back down on the carpet and cover’s his ears with his hands ignoring the toys completely. He withdraws his hands listening to see if the argument is over... He hears the sound of a slap. Alfie listens intently and slowly steps towards the door. As he presses his ear against the door he hears the sound of the front door opening.
- 4. Alfie climbs on the bed and pulls open his blind and watches from the window as his dad gets into a big dark grey van. He bangs on the window after him the climbs down from the bed and goes onto the landing. SCENE INT. LANDING – MORNING Alfie watches as his mother slams the door. He gets up and creeps to the top of the stairs then stops to listen. Alfie hears the sound of pans crashing then a frustrated scream and a glass smashing. He begins to sneak down the stairs. He stops as a step creaks under his weight then hears the ‘pop’ of a bottle opening and continues. SCENE INT. HALLWAY – MORNING As Alfie gets to the bottom of the stairs he looks into the front room then looks at the car keys on the hook. He stretches up to the keys but they are just out of reach. Alfie pulls the yellow pages from under the shoe rack and steps on it to reach the keys. He walks over to the front door and pulls it open slowly. As the door creaks Alfie stands silently waiting for his mum to notice. When it is clear to him that that isn't going to happen he slips out of the door. SCENE EXT. OUTSIDE HOUSE – MORNING He unlocks the car and climbs in the drivers side. SCENE INT/EXT. INSIDE CAR – MORNING Alfie puts the key in the ignition and as he turns the
- 5. key the radio starts playing shockingly loud hard core techno music. He starts pressing buttons trying to figure out how to turn the music off. The windscreen wipers start. Alfie is still pushing the buttons trying to make the radio stop. As he pushes them the radio changes from the loud hard core techno music to classical music then to loud thrash metal. The CD ejects from the CD drive then Alfie turns around looks out the back window. He sees his mum standing by the door. He pushes down with his feet trying to press the pedals to drive the car but his legs are too short. SCENE EXT. OUTSIDE HOUSE – MORNING His mother walks around the side of the car but Alfie hits the lock button. She bangs on the door. MUM Alfie open the door. Come on Alfie open the door for mummy. The mum pulls the door handle MUM (shouting) Open the fucking door! The mum releases the handle and hurries back towards the house. SCENE INT. HALLWAY – MORNING Hands push the door open then rummage through the keys.
- 6. SCENE INT/EXT. INSIDE CAR – MORNING The lock to the car flips up. SCENE INT. HALLWAY – MORNING The hands find the keys then the hands push the door again. SCENE EXT. OUTSIDE HOUSE – MORNING Alfie is in his father’s arms standing in between his mums car and his dad’s van which is parked on the curb in front of the house. His father puts Alfie down and Alfie takes his hand and leads him up the small path between the cars and into the house. Alfie stops at the doorstep to look back at the mother then walks inside.
