Language acquisition occurs subconsciously as children learn their first language through meaningful interaction, without conscious knowledge of rules. Language learning is the result of direct instruction where students have conscious knowledge of the language and can discuss rules, but may not be able to communicate effectively. Both require exposure to the target language, but acquisition is communicative while learning is non-communicative and can lead to memorizing rules without speaking ability.
