Regarding the company’s 20-year

Job Design  Work
Design
Job design used to be the job of HR, now it’s
work design and we all have to do it
“It is true that many specific, well-defined jobs
continue to exist in contemporary organizations. But
we presently are in the midst of what we believe are
fundamental changes in the relationships among
people, the work they do, and the organizations for
which they do it” (p. 466).
Oldham, G. R., and Hackman, J. R. 2010. "Not What It Was and Not What It
Will Be: The Future of Job Design Research," Journal of Organizational
Behavior (31:2/3), pp. 463-479.

Hybrid Teams
Sorry, Hydra, you can be beaten by a team without a
Grand Master and no Super Computer
In 2001, Maggie Neale and I wrote a paper entitled,
“Information processing in traditional, hybrid, and
virtual teams: From nascent knowledge to
transactive memory.” By hybrid we meant a
combination of face-to-face and distant team
members… not anymore: Techno-human hybrid
teams.
We use the term hybrid rather than augmented as these technologies are
doing more than augmenting the work of the human team members, they
are contributing work itself.

“"In most big companies, the left hand doesn't know what
the right hand is doing," says the 46-year-old Gilmour,
Tacit's founder and CEO. "Those sorts of accidents and
disconnects and overlaps happen every day in
organizations, and they're expensive. You have two people
doing the same thing, and that wastes money."
FBI field official Colleen Rowley has said the agency never linked
evidence that alleged co-conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui took flying
lessons with an earlier report about Middle Eastern men enrolled in flight
school.”

No more literature review, then I present
my model. Instead, I present my model,
Watson writes (and dynamically updates
for readers) the lit review, and points me
to areas I missed.
The organization has to change to make use of the power of the analytics.
The American Psychological Association will need to rewrite its

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Or… my wishlist for analytics. I’m interested in innovation wherever I can find it.
  • #5: Cal gave me a great analytical background, but saw the wisdom in keeping me from a stats double major. CMU showed me the importance of interdisciplinary work for understanding work and organizations.
  • #6: CMU was also where I started my focus on the future of work.
  • #7: The years are when the data was collected. The delay from 87-93 (dissertation data) had to do with how the Work was perceived politically. The term “fascist” was used to describe The idea of computer monitoring.
  • #8: More recently these organizations have played key roles
  • #9: It’s also the most exciting time as great organizations like IBM and Google are doing even more With academics on the topics of work. This is the webpage of an event this Oct at Google. About 170 execs and academics talking about Work and the study of work given the data we now have.
  • #10: This background has led to a fairly focused perspective:
  • #11: 2011 – Jossey-Bass
  • #16: ..around people, technology, and organizational process. Sociotechnical systems for the real world.
  • #17: My current projects include a prequel to The Plugged-In Manager – more of an organization and work design approach – once you have the design then, you use Plugged-In Management to work within the design.
  • #18: Let go of 20th century organizational boundaries and processes
  • #19: This is a shot of Sean D. Tucker – Oracle’s aerobatic pilot. I had the chance to see him speak to 400 new Oracle sales people. Mostly in their 20s. Hold tight to your performance standards, your relationships, the value of education, and the laws of physics. A great message and driven home by him pointing out that in his world the outcome is death if you don’t. From my perspective, Analytics is the backbone of this --- what are the laws of physics in our work? We can lead by letting go – change how we do work in the 21st century, but we need Analytics as the backbone. I’m going offer some areas where I’m most excited about the possibilities.
  • #22: 124,233 today (went down, oddly)
  • #23: About 200 a week? ..though oddly it went down in the week since I submitted these slides.
  • #24: Depiction by John Trumbull of Washington resigning his commission as commander-in-chief Most of these books are focused on interpersonal leadership – leadership that looks like this with The light shining down on the leader.
  • #25: http://westerncivguides.umwblogs.org/2012/05/01/population-growth-pre-post-industrial-revolution/ The focus on interpersonal leadership made sense following the Industrial revolution. People moved To be closer to their work. Now the trend is in the other direction (with perhaps an exception for Silicon Valley)
  • #26: http://scottberkun.com/2013/how-many-companies-are-100-distributed/ Scott Berkun’s book, The Year Without Pants chronicled his time at Automattic, a fully distributed co.
  • #27: So, back to my perspective
  • #28: Moving from Plugged-In Management to Lead by Letting Go Let’s start with the idea of Complements for Leadership (full on Substiution may be going too far.
  • #30: These are the filters for finding opportunity in the Analytics of our work
  • #32: You’re already making these moves
  • #34: I’ll walk through these topics and share some examples. I expect you’ll know this issues around many of these – But I hope this serves as a pointer to the kinds of things At least one organization science person has on her wishlist.
  • #36: This quote comes from a time where sharing meant sending out a report. Not realtime analytics.
  • #37: http://chinwag.com/blogs/sam-michel/organic-organization-chart-autodesks-new-view-organisational-structure
  • #38: Where have we found work value in the application of analytics to transparency?
