You boss was very impressed with the great job you did in estimating the pump station, and she
asked you to be in charge of her scheduling department also. She asked you to meet with Marcia
Kellog, the superintendent of the pump water station, to find out how she is planning to build the
job.
The meeting took place at your boss office in the PJ on March 10, 2019. Marcia informed you that:
All activity on the project should start on May 19, 2019 the latest. Before you start any work, you
have to secure 2 permits from the municipality: a city permit and a building permit. The city permit
takes 5 working days to obtain, and must be secured before May 23, 2019. Given your experience
in the PJ area you are confident that the building permit takes 21 working days to obtain, but can
only be requested after the city permit has been secured. Additionally, you can only apply for a
building permit after you have installed temporary electrical connections and plumbing facilities on
site. Each of these takes 5 days to install, and you do not need to have a city permit to start them.
The site where the pump will be located is characterized by a clayey soil that will need an adequate
support system to prevent any soil collapse. Furthermore, given the proximity of the site to the
waterbed, you are very concerned to do your job efficiently to prevent any water seepage. Once
the building permit has been obtained, you can start driving sheet piles (a task estimated to take 18
days). Naturally, before you begin driving sheet piles, you need to mobilize all the necessary
equipment and personnel, but you are not allowed to move anything on site before June 17, 2019.
Furthermore, before you begin driving sheet piles you need to conduct 4 days of subsurface
exploration.
After driving the sheet piles is complete, you can begin excavating. The nature of soil requires a
staged excavation & tieback sequence. That means excavating, securing the slopes with tiebacks
and then continuing excavation. The process is simple and sequential, so you decided to just lump
it as 90 days of excavation and tieback.
As soon as you reach the bottom of the excavation, you will start laying down the concrete of the
mat foundation and the inverse slab, which you can expect to take a total of 43 days. Scheduling at
this point becomes tricky: Once you are done with the foundation and the inverse slab, you can
start building the wet well floor and doing the FRP (Formwork and Reinforcing steel Placement) of
the heavy wall (EL72 to EL95). These tasks are expected to last 4 and 5 days respectively. When
you are finished with both, you can start pouring concrete for the heavy wall, which will take you 8
days. A PVC waterproofing membrane will be lying on the exterior of all the walls. Installing the
waterproofing and backfilling up to EL95 will only take 3 days each, but you have to remember to
let the heavy wall dry for 7 days before applying the membrane. Once the membrane is applied,
you can backfill up to EL95 with soil.
