INTRODUCTION
Community service is defined as a work done by one person or a group of people that
benefits others. For this assignment, we are required to carry out a community service and keep
a personal journal that records our journey throughout the whole process. The objectives of this
module are to nurture a culture of respect and care towards all members of the community among
the fortunate students and to plant a seed of dream into the heart of children in the orphanage
homes.
The orphanage homes that we visited is Good Samaritan Homes located in Klang. Good
Samaritan Homes is founded in January 1999 by Albert Ong a former pastor and his wife. Good
Samaritan Home cares for the children, such as those who come from families where parents
have abandoned them, or where a parent is unable to cope with the divorce, or where the child
has lost one or both parents. Today, the homes have 35 boys and girls whose age ranges from
4-23 years old.
We spent a really good time with the children and it is a very meaningful activity to me.
This activity helps to develop a sense of personal and social responsibility. We should be more
responsible, be more sensitive and be more knowledgeable about the community and their needs.

EVENT DAY
On the event day, we gather at Taylor’s University at 9.00am. After everyone had arrived,
we depart to Good Samaritan Homes. We arrive at there around 9.50am. When we arrive, Mr.
Robert gathers all the children in front of the house. Our event starts off with a small introduction
by me. I briefly introduce about who we are, where we from and the reason we are visiting today.
Before we start our workshop on the construction industry, we have an ice breaking session
prepared by Carmen and Sam. This ice breaking session is for us to know about the children and
to interact with them. The game we are going to play is called “Human Bingo”. The game is similar
to bingo, but instead of numbers, we fill it with our characteristic. The children need to find the
person who match the characteristic to sign the paper in order to complete the bingo.
During the game, some of the children are very active. They walk around to ask us and
enjoying the game. Some of the children are very shy. We approach them to encourage them and
help them to find the person who match the characteristic. The game last about 30 minutes. For
those who have completed the bingo, we have prepared a notebook for them. There are total 15
children completed the bingo.
The children are enjoying the ice breaking session
16
After the ice breaking session, we proceed to our workshop on the construction industry.
This workshop is conducted by Bou Sim and me. In this workshop, we are going to share about
our knowledge about the construction industry with them. We also talk about the professions
involve in this industry, which are architect, engineer, quantity surveyor and contractor. We brief
them about the job each profession does and how they work with each other. When we are
explaining, we showed them some image of the unique building, the construction drawing and the
Bills of Quantities (BQ).
Showing the children the construction drawing
The children now have a better understanding of the construction industry. We move on
to our main game which is “Design and Build a House”. This game is conducted by the game
team. In this game, the children need to design and build a house with newspaper, straw or
toothpick. They will be divided into a group of 5 to 6 people. Each group will be assigned with a
game leader, which are Ashley, Wei Han, Bou Sim, Yunice, Zhao Hong and Siew Qing to assist
them throughout the game. After the children have formed a group, they start to brainstorm about
what kind of house they want to build. They have come out with a lot of creative ideas. Once the
design is done, it is time for lunch.
17
The children are discussing on the design of the house
The lunch is prepared by food & beverage team. They have prepared chicken rice for the
children. The children enjoyed their lunch very much and is satisfied with the food we prepared.
After lunch, the children continue with the game. They need to build out the model they design
with the material we prepared for them. They spend about 1 hour and 15 minutes to build out the
model.
The children are focusing on building their model
18
There is a small presentation for the children to present their designs and the concept of
their house. They come out with a lot of creative and amazing idea such as tree house, shark
house, kampung house and etc. The children did a fantastic job and they really enjoyed the game.
We have picked 4 groups which have fulfilled the criteria which are design, stable, teamwork and
costing. We gave out the prizes such as pen drive, notebook and bottle to the winner.

Before we end our event, we give out the gift we have prepared for the children. We also
take a group photo with the children and Mr. Robert. We also give Mr. Robert the grocery such
as oil, shampoo, instant noodle, can food and etc. that we bought for them. When we are leaving,
the children look very sad. They shake hands and say goodbye to all of us.

POST-EVENT
After the event ended, we need to record a reflection video. The media team has prepared
a set of question for every team. Everyone has to talk about 30 seconds.
The media team is recording the reflection video
21
REFLECTION
The event ended successfully thanks to all of the group members. It is my first time
organizing an event and I am very scared that I am not able to do a good job. As a commander,
I need to make sure every group members have done their job. I need to organize meetings to
discuss about our whole activities such as the place we want to visit, the date of visitation and the
games we want to play with the children to make sure our whole event can run smoothly. Every
group member has done a really good job. Although there are twenty eight of us, we are able to
work together and have a good teamwork.
During the process, we faced some challenges when we are finding the orphanage that
we want to visit. We contacted four orphanages, but some of the orphanage only allowed
maximum 2 hours of visitation and some of the orphanage does not allow us to visit. Luckily, we
found Good Samaritan Homes. When we contact Mr. Robert, he accepted our request with
alacrity. I want to thank Mr. Robert for not only allow us to visit Good Samaritan Homes but he
shares a lot of knowledge about orphanage with us.
Besides that, we also faced challenges when we are planning the games we want to play
during the visitation. We hope that the games we played are educational and will benefit the
children. Moreover, since we are unable confirm on the orphanage we are visiting and the agenda
of our event, we are unable to find more sponsor as all the companies need about one month to
go through our proposal. However, the budget of our event is still under control.
Through the games we prepared for this event, we give the children an overview of the
construction industry. We share with them about the profession involve in this industry. In the
future, they might consider to be a part this industry. I am very glad that the children really enjoy
and having fun during the event.
22
Throughout this assignment, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and experience. I am
very grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in this event. This event is really meaningful
as we are able to contribute to this society. It is my first time visiting an orphanage. It makes me
have a sense of social responsibility. We should care and respect towards all members of society.
We can help them not only through donation, but also giving love and care for the society. Just
like our event, sharing our knowledge with them is also a way of contribution. It is an unforgettable
event for me. In the future, I will participate in more community services and become a responsible
citizen of this country.

The game is similar to bingo, but instead of numbers, we fill it with our characteristic. The children need to find the person who match the characteristic to sign the paper in order to complete the bingo. During the game, some of the children are very active. They walk around to ask us and enjoying the game. Some of the children are very shy. We approach them to encourage them and help them to find the person who match the characteristic. Showing the children the construction drawing The children now have a better understanding of the construction industry. We move on to our main game which is “Design and Build a House”. This game is conducted by the game team. In this game, the children need to design and build a house with newspaper, straw or toothpick. They will be divided into a group of 5 to 6 people. Each group will be assigned with a game leader, which are Ashley, Wei Han, Bou Sim, Yunice, Zhao Hong and Siew Qing to assist them throughout the game. After the children have formed a group, they start to brainstorm about what kind of house they want to build. They have come out with a lot of creative ideas. • 22. 21 REFLECTION The event ended successfully thanks to all of the group members. It is my first time organizing an event and I am very scared that I am not able to do a good job. As a commander, I need to make sure every group members have done their job. I need to organize meetings to discuss about our whole activities such as the place we want to visit, the date of visitation and the games we want to play with the children to make sure our whole event can run smoothly. Every group member has done a really good job. Although there are twenty eight of us, we are able to work together and have a good teamwork. During the process, we faced some challenges when we are finding the orphanage that we want to visit. We contacted four orphanages, but some of the orphanage only allowed maximum 2 hours of visitation and some of the orphanage does not allow us to visit. Luckily, we found Good Samaritan Homes. When we contact Mr. Robert, he accepted our request with alacrity. I want to thank Mr. Robert for not only allow us to visit Good Samaritan Homes but he shares a lot of knowledge about orphanage with us. Besides that, we also faced challenges when we are planning the games we want to play during the visitation. We hope that the games we played are educational and will benefit the children. Moreover, since we are unable confirm on the orphanage we are visiting and the agenda of our event, we are unable to find more sponsor as all the companies need about one month to go through our proposal. However, the budget of our event is still under control. Through the games we prepared for this event, we give the children an overview of the construction industry. We share with them about the profession involve in this industry. In the future, they might consider to be a part this industry. I am very glad that the children really enjoy and having fun during the event.
  • 23. 22 Throughout this assignment, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and experience. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in this event. This event is really meaningful as we are able to contribute to this society. It is my first time visiting an orphanage. It makes me have a sense of social responsibility. We should care and respect towards all members of society. We can help them not only through donation, but also giving love and care for the society. Just like our event, sharing our knowledge with them is also a way of contribution. It is an unforgettable event for me. In the future, I will participate in more community services and become a responsible citizen of this country.
