The audiolingual method was widely used in the 1950s and 1960s to teach language. It was based on behaviorism and believed that language skills are learned through habit formation from oral presentation and positive reinforcement. The goals of this method were accurate pronunciation, grammar, quick responses in speech, and sufficient vocabulary. Teachers used dialogues, drills, and pattern practices with repetition and substitution to help students develop correct habits without mistakes.
