Lipids are classified into two main categories: simple lipids and compound lipids. Simple lipids include triacylglycerols and waxes. Compound lipids contain phospholipids such as lecithin, cephalin, and phosphatidyl serine; glycosphingolipids like cerebrosides and gangliosides; and non-phosphorylated lipids including sulpholipids. Within these categories are various sub-types of lipids that are differentiated based on their chemical structure and components.
