Cooperative Performance in BIM
: Information delivery cycle
The following picture illustrates the strategies which the British government
developeded. Every point needs a whole book but let's discuss them together.

In this picture we see a logical framework for production of information in project stages.
This approach does not require more work, but requires mutual understanding and
confidence within the team. When we commit to this approach, activities of profusion
such as stopping work to look for information and defects resulting from weak

coordination between the models and invisible data are reduced. There are two
beginnings:
The first start is from NEED at the top right of the previous picture, if we start a new
project.
The second start is form Opex start for already existing buildings. We start from the first
point NEED where we define information which employers need (BIM Employers
Information Requirements, EIR), develop the strategy and provide a clear definition of
work requirements and basic decision points (we can rely on CIC BIM protocol) and the
most important sections are:
• Technical, what are software platforms?
• Management, especially for administrative processes.
• Commercial, financial details of the project.
As follows:

Where we determine the required, who will perform it and here we determine the
resources needed for the project. Then procurement arrow comes out and we determine
roles, responsibilities, authorities and BIM EXECUTION PLAN. The next step is
developing the business plan, standards and methods. It includes:
 Project Implementation Plan
 Supply Chain Capability Summary

Then we move towards the references and the Master Information Delivery Plan, MIDP,
in which we determine the protocols and procedures for each project stage. Where we
will implement each operation and when we do the schedules whch includes:
 Task Team Information Delivery Plan
 Responsibility Matrix

By entering the project’s operations, information and details at every stage increase until
we finish full model on delivery. The first part PIM is divided into six stages, the second
part AIM is the seventh stage and the seven stages are in the Common Data
Environment, CDE.

5-‫والعموالت‬ ‫البناء‬ ‫مرحلة‬ Build & Commission.
6-‫والتقفيل‬ ‫التسليم‬ ‫مرحلة‬ Handover & Closeout.

The second part Asset Information Model, AIM includes one stage, operation and in
use. Comparing the project performance with the owner's requirements, if they do not
meet, the elements that are not met are identified and changed. At this stage, we will
have sufficient information and model to manage the facility. For more details at this
point, you can revise the UK Construction Industry Council.

Below the information delivery cycle, you can see:
 The green circles represent information exchange between Supplier's and
Information Exchange supplier
 The red circles represent the exchange of information among team members and
discussions with the owner. Employer's Decision Point.
The BIM workflow plan through common collaborationtools:
At the beginning we should be aware of BIM workflow term:
BIM = software tools
This means that BIM includes software tools that help us in modeling
Workflow = ways & plans
This means identifying plans and ways to use these tools for improving results.
In general, there are two main ways in BIM for working cooperatively in a company and
they are:
1-Direct linking between different disciplines for the same model (available in Revit
program), its concept is similar to external files concept in CAD system xref , one of its
advantages is the small size of its files and it is also possible to manage the permits
through it , noting that the work is not in one file.

2-Worksharing, there is one central model which is shared by everyone and easy to
access and deal with. Its advantage is more collaborative (which BIM adopts) so it
allows updating the project in real time. Its disadvantage is the large size of files due to
the results and it also requires a very conscious management of work set concept.
Work organization:
There are fourworkscenariosandwe shoulddetermine which one willuse:
1- One file where everyone works on
2- Each department (architectural - structural - electromechanical) works on its
file and all are linked.
3-The project is divided into sections such as:
a. The ground floor and lower floors in a file.
b. The first floor and the rest of floors in another file.
c. The general location in a file.
The second and third methods are combined if the project is too large. For
example, the architectural plan of ground floor will be in a separate file.

Validation of the Model :

 Open the central file, disconnect it from work and do Audit.
 Separate all Non-transmittal linked-in files.
 Delete all unused views, sheets, schedules, images, legends, etc.
 Delete unused design options.
 Use Purge command three times because there are some items not deleted from
the first time.
 update saving the central form, including all relevant details and notes
 Save file to publish folder with the same name
Technologyfor supporting collaboration:
We can consider that the obstacle of collaboration between different platforms has been
technically overcome through creating the IFC formula for supporting coordinated operation.
This formula is being continuously developed to support different disciplines until it becomes a
standard for documenting programs efficiency in information exchange. Although of a little
support of design programs in dealing with the IFC standard, other methods have been created
to overcome thisimbalance.
On the human side, contractual formulas _such as design and implementation_ were
adopted to enhance cooperation between the owner, engineers and contractors at an
early stage of the project. This information sharing has helped in knowledge exchange
and discovering innovative ideas which have reflected in design processes and outputs.
These changes needed introducing new standards for work at the level of projects,
organizations and industry, up to the national level.
The integrated design is a comprehensive process for integrating information from
stakeholders through developing protocols of decision, responsibility, equity, rewards
and risk from the project start. In the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), all building
information acquired during different phases and related to people, systems and
practices is integrated into an innovative process to improve the value for participants.

Employers Information Requirements EIR is an emerging example of this integration that
relates to information about the technical, managerial and operational capabilities of the
organization. For this, the integration of the AEC industry with universities, governments
and other industries is imperative to increase the efficiency of individual capabilities, as
well as to encourage companies to adopt innovative technology. The benefit of using
BIM in projects varies according to the method of use - modeling, collaboration, or
integration – and depending on the target level (whether individuals, projects,
organizations or industry).

Common Data Environment, CDE:
20% to 25% of project team time is lost in file search. This loss can be avoided by
organizing data as we will now read when examining the shared data environment. What
we are going to see is a British code that focuses on the second level of BIM. There is a
collaborative environment, but it was created in separate files. It is aimed to simplify and
organize work to achieve Employer's Information Requirements.

Let's start in the next part to focus on the process before starting implementation:
1. BIM manager creates subfolders as following:

In designing we start with WORK IN PROGRESS which all team members work on this
folder, which contains all plans and drawings under way. This folder is the place of files
that have not yet been approved.
The files could be modified to fit the requirements of the consultant and they should
contain the following checks:
a) Model suitability check.
b) SMP check.
c) Technical content check.
d) COBie completeness check.
e) Drawings extract checks along with any additional documentation that is
shared as a co-ordinated package of information.
f) Approval by the task team manager.

XREF, title sheets, mapping, surveys, imagery … etc.
Information passes the portal APPROVED 1 and move to the second stage SHARED
2 - SHARED folder for the files which will be checked out and exchanged with all
disciplines, institutions and companies to develop their design and common files are also
included such as XREF, title sheets, mapping, surveys, imagery … etc
Published.
PUBLISH folder is available for the team by placing it in Client Shared Area (a folder
contains SHARED & PUBLISH), it must be approved by the employer or his authorized
representative and it must also include: does work is compliant with requirements of
employer EIR or not.
This folder contains more subfolders that can be modified to suit requirements of owner's
consultant. The information passes the portal AUTHORISED and what is approved is
transferred to the third stage Published.

3- Published stage contains all final files and drawings that is published, approved and
become independent without links from other files by making BIND to it. This folder
contains the last IFC folder. Data cannot be deleted or edited in this stage, but will keep
even archiving information received through VERIFIED portal, which represents moving
to Archive stage.
4-Archive stage contains all versions and previous processes (Milestone), and finally
received files from others that be read only cannot be modified. Sharing information in
such a way saves a lot of time and effort. Modification rights have reserved only for the
original building, the rest can be only read and seen.

So far, all of this was mentioned in PAS 1192:2007,
it is a part of Capital Expenditures CapEX which is how to manage files within a design
office
In BS 1192 - 2 - 2013, the Capital Expenditures (CapEX) was expanded and another
part was added (the operational mode, OpEx).

Firstly: Capital Expenditures, CapEX:
After finishing the previous stages WIP & SHARED & PUBLISH & ARCHIVE,
there is Specialist Appointment which is special requirements like SUPPLIER, it goes to
WIP to modify the design through APPROVED portal to the SHARED stage in the
CLINT SHARED AREA.

OperationalExpenditures, OpEx:
Secondly: Operational Expenditures, OpEx:
Work in the field, the files exist in PUBLISHED DOCUMENTATION are checked out
through VALIDATED portal and documented through ACCEPTED portal to be used
when they go to the site. These files cannot be modified in OpEx, the consultant of the
client shall deliver the site to the contractor and the documentation get in information
exchange.

During the work, it must be RE-VERIFIED by sending any request for information, RFI.
For example, there is a door and its height is 180 cm, or a mosque and its direction is
not correct, or a modify resulting from the site to the consultant of the owner or financier ,
when it is approved by the consultant, he sent it to the design office for modifying
through the sixth portal Authorized.

This formula is being continuously developed to support different disciplines until it becomes a standard for documenting programs efficiency in information exchange. Although of a little support of design programs in dealing with the IFC standard, other methods have been created to overcome thisimbalance. On the human side, contractual formulas _such as design and implementation_ were adopted to enhance cooperation between the owner, engineers and contractors at an early stage of the project. This information sharing has helped in knowledge exchange and discovering innovative ideas which have reflected in design processes and outputs. These changes needed introducing new standards for work at the level of projects, organizations and industry, up to the national level. The integrated design is a comprehensive process for integrating information from stakeholders through developing protocols of decision, responsibility, equity, rewards and risk from the project start. In the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), all building information acquired during different phases and related to people, systems and practices is integrated into an innovative process to improve the value for participants.

BIMarabia – Omar Selim Employers Information Requirements EIR is an emerging example of this integration that relates to information about the technical, managerial and operational capabilities of the organization. For this, the integration of the AEC industry with universities, governments and other industries is imperative to increase the efficiency of individual capabilities, as well as to encourage companies to adopt innovative technology. The benefit of using BIM in projects varies according to the method of use - modeling, collaboration, or integration – and depending on the target level (whether individuals, projects, organizations or industry).

This loss can be avoided by organizing data as we will now read when examining the shared data environment. What we are going to see is a British code that focuses on the second level of BIM. There is a collaborative environment, but it was created in separate files. It is aimed to simplify and organize work to achieve Employer's Information Requirements. This folder is the place of files that have not yet been approved. The files could be modified to fit the requirements of the consultant and they should contain the following checks: a) Model suitability check. b) SMP check. c) Technical content check. d) COBie completeness check. e) Drawings extract checks along with any additional documentation that is shared as a co-ordinated package of information. f) Approval by the task team manager.

PUBLISH folder is available for the team by placing it in Client Shared Area (a folder contains SHARED & PUBLISH), it must be approved by the employer or his authorized representative and it must also include: does work is compliant with requirements of employer EIR or not. This folder contains more subfolders that can be modified to suit requirements of owner's consultant. The information passes the portal AUTHORISED and what is approved is transferred to the third stage Published.

This folder contains the last IFC folder. Data cannot be deleted or edited in this stage, but will keep even archiving information received through VERIFIED portal, which represents moving to Archive stage. 4-Archive stage contains all versions and previous processes (Milestone), and finally received files from others that be read only cannot be modified. Sharing information in such a way saves a lot of time and effort. These files cannot be modified in OpEx, the consultant of the client shall deliver the site to the contractor and the documentation get in information exchange.
