What is MoLeNET ? C Mobile Learning Network, it is a unique collaborative approach to encouraging, supporting, expanding and promoting mobile learning , primarily in the English Further Education sector, via supported shared cost mobile learning projects. How did we get started? C The EFC Consortium was successful in its bid last October and secured a £1 40,000 funding to invest in mobile technology. So far, 320 devices have been ordered including 70 iphones, 70 Flip HD video cameras, 36 netbooks, 25 PDAs, 40 voice recorders, 28 Fizzbooks, 16 Sony Self review Cameras and 20 Talking photo albums. There are 180 participants (41 Staff and 139 Students) including 18 E&D Champions , 18 Voice Champions and 13 e-Mentors .

What is the project about? C The project is about empowering students within the college decision process and engaging them in the college life through communication. There are 3 main focus to the project: Anti discrimination Empowering students Changing the way we teach and learn by using mobile technologies

What do we want to do? C Building an inclusive culture and increasing student voice through the use of technology. Students are essential to creating new ways of working and learning through your different roles on the project, by building a supportive culture and embedding new technologies as a learning tool. This is a student-led project, for the students and by the students.

How are we going to do it? C Participants have all be equipped with a mobile device of their choice that is fit for their project outcome

What have we done? C 8 Subject Areas are involved in the project. All with different expertise. The allowed them to capture digital images, MP3's and videos enabling them to work on self-initiated projects that reflect the main theme of tackling discrimination and encouraging inclusiveness . The handsets also facilitated cross college / borough communication and dissemination, they can easily share their work and ideas with each other by publishing their work onto Mahara e-Portfolios our Communication platform

What outcomes are we working towards? C Showcasing event –June 26 2010 (Show and Exhibition) Website – Collecting work from ePortfolios Induction Material E&D and Voice e/mLearning Toolkit Road Show

Student eMentoring Scheme? The e-Mentoring scheme is part of our MoLeNET project and is designed to help us to move forward with eLearning at EFC, embedding mobile technology as a pedagogical tool for both learning and teaching. This year we are piloting the eMentoring scheme and based on experience and feedback, we will be improving the programme to make it cross college next academic year. We plan to appoint one student eMentor in each course like we appoint a student rep.

Student eMentoring Scheme? So what does it entail? The scheme is based on a Phase 1 MoLeNET Project at Oaklands college. The idea was to link the pedagogical viewpoint of the teacher with the pragmatic approach and technical ability of the student. Mobile technology is now ubiquitous among the 14–19 group and it is necessary to leverage this to provide enhanced learning opportunities.

Student eMentoring Scheme? Project rationale FE teachers often have quite high workloads, with preparation, marking and accurate record-keeping. Unfortunately this can affect the adoption of new technology and professional development. Students, on the other hand, have strong intrinsic motivation to use new technology (particularly mobile technology) in cementing social groups, and have experience in its use. The eMentors project aims to join the pedagogical viewpoint of the teacher with the pragmatic approach and technical ability of the student. Using the students to support teachers in using technology appropriately in the classroom or workplace, the eMentors will help to develop staff use of mobile technology by mentoring them with methods and techniques that the students themselves take for granted. .
