Introduction
Design engineering is an initiative taken by Gujarat Technology
University in this direction with the help and guidance of the
professors of IITs and the GTU Innovation Council we are looking
ahead in moving on the path of innovation. so now let’s understand,
what is design engineering..?
Design is a plan of a system, its implementation and
utilization for attaining a goal. It is to change undesired situation into
desired situation means to find solution for undesired/uncomfortable
situation. ... Designing means evolving goal oriented processes.
Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to
solve complex problems, and find desirable solutions for clients. A
design mindset is not problem-focused; its solution focused and action
oriented towards creating a preferred future. Design thinking draws
upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning, to explore
possibilities of what could be—and to create desired outcomes that
benefit the end user.
“Design-thinking firms stand apart in their willingness to engage in the
task of continuously redesigning their business…to create advances in both
innovation and efficiency—the combination that produces the most
powerful competitive edge.”

Basic Of AEIOU Canvas
Understanding the problem of society is one of the biggest
challenges for engineering student as till now they were making
project on imaginary ideas. On the first day, we got the basic
knowledge of design engineering. What is design engineering and
why we need design engineering? How this subject will be useful to
the student? All this questions has been cleared properly and also that
how this activity will be useful in design engineering.
These are the steps of the project or problem. In this canvas, you
have to find out…
 What is user to your problems?
 What is Environment of your project?
 What are activities?
 What is objects and Interaction of your problems?
These are the 1st
step of the Project or Problem. List out all these
things and make an AEIOU Canvas, it is the basic action of Design
Engineering. It will help you to know about your problem or project.
2.1 Identify Users
On entering the government school in gate, there was a small
playground. There were many children (mostly boys) playing in the
playground. One very important reason for this good number could be
the Right to Education Act implemented by the government where
children between the age group of six to fourteen years have the right
to free and compulsory education in India. They are also entitled to
the mid-day meal scheme where they get free food for lunch.

9
We are observed school 2 days and identify some users, these are
listed as below
 Users
 Principle
 Students
 Teachers
 Visitors
 Parents
 Peon etc.
2.2 Observe Activities
Activity is a basic step to understanding engineering design. We have
observed user, they were doing different types of activities for
example,
 Activities
 Students were Praying
 Taking Mid-day meal
 Enjoying tour
 Playing in ground
 Studying
 Taking part in ‘Science Fair’ etc.
2.3 Environment of School
Environment is an also important part of the observation;
it is also affect on the users and activities. The overall environment of
School is Adorable, Airy & Greenery. The environment of school is
also dependent on Location of School.
Design Engineering
Gyanmanjari Institute Of Technology, Bhavnagar
10
Examples of School environment as below,
 Small Class-rooms
 Poor transportation
 Not constructed at proper location
 Lake of Benches etc.
2.4 Object & Interaction
We have listed out Objects in school, like
 Objects
 Benches
 Fan
 Computers
 Tree-gard
 Water tank etc.
Interaction is a kind of action that occurs as two or more living
and Non-living things have an effect upon one another. The idea of a
two-way effect is essential in the concept of interaction. There are
some examples of Interaction,
 Interaction
 Student to student
 Teacher to student
 Microphone to speaker
 Benches to student
 Principle to student etc.

2.5 AEIOU Canvas
By using these all observation we have to make the AEIOU canvas.
This is a basic canvas for our Project or Problem. This canvas has all
basic information about users, activities, environment etc. which will
helpful for us ahead.
Design Engineering
Gyanmanjari Institute Of Technology, Bhavnagar
12
Empathy Mapping
These are the 2nd
step of the Project or Problem. Understanding
the problem of society is one of the biggest challenges for engineering
student as till now they were making project on imaginary ideas. So
this was based on understanding the domains of the problem in
broader sense which emphasized on interacting with the people of
your domain area which included more of casual talk rather than
technical session. And this activity was named as Story boarding
canvassing.
Our domain was Government School, We started with
identify the people related to our domain directly and indirectly. Then
list out the activities which are required for Government School. As
we need to focus on people’s emotions we wrote Happy and Sad
Story which helps us to get more attached with user.

13
 Happy Story
Those students are not born ‘Golden Spoon Children’ by birth,
although they put their complete efforts to gain knowledge to the
maximum level they can. Most of the students in the government
school are from economically very weak backgrounds. The parents
mostly work as labourers and therefore they do not have enough time
for their children. The students can’t purchase study material but still
when given a chance, they put their complete efforts for knowledge.
Design Engineering
Gyanmanjari Institute Of Technology, Bhavnagar
14
 Sad Story
As we observed the students are deeply interested in studies, but they
can’t study because of the lack of facilities in government school and
also some kind of social reasons. There was a discussion held with the
teachers and in the discussions it was pointed that the student teacher
ratio of one class is almost 70-80 students to one teacher. So, the
teachers find it extremely difficult to pay individual attention to each
student. These are reasons which ‘Hinders’ the progress of a student.

15
Ideation Canvas
These are the 3rd
step of the project or problem. From the user
canvas, you have an idea what are the people? In ideation canvas, you
have to carry out which type of activities is related to your project and
people? What is situation and location regarding to activities? Then
after you find the possible solutions. It is depend or not depend to
your activities.
1. People: students, principle, teachers, parents, visitors, peon etc.
2. Activities: Children going to schools, visits/ tours, taking mid-day
meal, enjoying the sports, studying etc.
3. Situation/Context/Location:
Situation Context Location
1.Noisefull atmosphere Students are yelled classroom
2.Quality of Mid-day
meal is not good
Occurs Food-poising At hall
3.Dirty school
infrastructure
Students write something
on it
Benches, door, wall
etc.
4.Electricity Problem Disturbance in management Whole school
5.Attendence Problem Conventional method is
time consuming
Staffroom &
Classroom

4. Props/Possible Solutions:
 Students should take their responsibility
 ‘Gujarat Health & Safety Department’ should take visit and
monthly report of school
 Use ‘Renewable Energy’
 Use ‘Automatic Attendance Taking System’

Product Development Canvas
4th
step is development of the product. From possible solutions,
you have idea about what is product? Our product is „Automatic
Attendance Taking System‟. So in this canvas, following things is to
do.
1. Purpose: Save the time, Education system run at a proper time,
Store the data for long time, Recover it anytime.
2. People: Principle, Teacher, Student, Peon.
3. Product Experience: Easy to use, Re-Programmable, User
friendly, Accurate.
4. Product functions: Proper management of attendance, Time
saving, highly secure, No tension of paper document, Connect with
main server, less space required.
5. Product Features: Detect face and finger, Powerful memory
storage, Rechargeable battery, Internet connected.
5

7. Customer Revalidation: Environmental effect, Ageing of
Hardware components.
8. Reject/Redesign/Retain: Fit at Proper Place, Use Polymer material

Mind Mapping
A mind map is a graphical way to represent ideas and concepts. It is a
visual thinking tool that helps structuring information, helping you to
better analyze, comprehend, synthesize, recall and generate new
ideas. Mind mapping is a simple technique for drawing information in
diagrams, instead of writing it in sentences.
