Using a Personal Response  System Robert Heinrich
What is a  Personal Response System A Personal Response System (PRS), allows large groups of people to vote on a topic or answer a question.  It allows audiences and students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to interactive questions using a keypad or other hand-held/computer devices.
How Classroom Response Systems Work Each student has a transmitter The classroom has one or more receivers Classroom is equipped with computer and usually an LCD Projector Instructor projects the question and multiple choice answers in front of class.  Results are tallied and displayed for all to see.
Key Points Limitations of traditional lectures Engaging students in peer discussions Learning gains you can expect Attitude gains you can expect Instructors opinions about using clickers
Why Use a  Student Response System? Engage students in active  learning. Encourage students' critical thought  processes requiring synthesis of  knowledge by providing them a way  to answer questions.  Improve class attendance and student participation. Encourage student preparation prior to class (reading of class materials).  Quickly determine whether homework or reading assignments have been completed before the class.
Improve instructor understanding of students' comprehension of curriculum.  Provide students with immediate feedback about the accuracy of their understanding of the curriculum.  Provide instructor with instant feedback of students' understanding of concepts and content knowledge.  Provide instructors with the ability to customize instruction based on student responses.  Use analysis of student responses as the basis for class discussion.  Traditional large lecture hall teaching methods are not suitable for all students. Meet the needs of diverse learning styles in large general education classes.  Align curriculum to state standards and produce reports quickly and easily Why Use a  Student Response System?
Tips from other faculty General advice from faculty for their colleagues: Make time in class for clickers. They cannot be an add-on. You need to significantly redesign your course to accommodate them Have low expectations for the first semester; increase your expectations in the future semester Understand student perspective (clicker purchase, registration process resulting in tpp file, clicker programming) Be prepared! Have a back up plan, if they don't work
More Tips Partner with an experienced user Have a support person accompany you on the first day (or more) Don't be afraid - be creative! Do not assign point for the first few weeks - use it for training;, and... For one class, have student revert back to show of hands in order to gain appreciation
