Faculty development Program in
Blended Mode
What is meant by FDP
According to ECAR Study of Faculty and
Information Technology, 2017, faculty
development program (FDP) must not merely
focus on helping faculty teach with technology
but help faculty to adopt learner-centered
instructional design as a way to foster student
success.
Student Centered Learning
According to the article titled ‘Student-Centered
Learning in Higher Education’ published in
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in
Higher Education, ‘Learner-centered methods of
content delivery allow students the opportunity
to control their learning since they require
students to take responsibility for their learning
by being actively involved in the learning process
rather than simply passively receiving information
from a lecture (Slunt & Giancario, 2004)’.
LCID (Learner Centered Instructional
Design)
Flexible learning environment
Flexible learning environment (FLE) can be created when
the instructor acts as facilitator. Flexible learning can be
demonstrated when students are given options in one or
more aspects of learning, such as timing, pace, place,
content, assessment requirements or methods of study.
Examples of FLE include
• Flipped classroom (Technology enhanced classroom)
• Pre assigning a topic and discussing by suggesting
resource links
• Self paced learning
• Choice based curriculum
Learning Support
Learning Support can be provided by suggesting
•Resources in the form of links
•Bookmarking
•Resources in the form of apps
Collaborative Learning Environment
Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE)
Technology enhanced collaborative environments can be
used so that learners and faculty can interact among
and between themselves.
Examples of CLE are
Google Docs
Mind Meister
Institution LMSs
Learning Analytics
Learning Analytics play a vital role in identifying
student’s learning types and hence allow you to
suggest a personalized learning environment for
learners.
Learning analytics can be realized from various types
of assessments both onsite and online.
By using Learning Record Store (LRS) and xAPI informal
learning can also be assessed.
What needs to be done to offer effective
classroom using blended mode of technology
Now that I have explained what are the essential
components of LCID and how it can be realized, we have
to ensure that
• faculties are trained in technology based tools and
applications
• they can design their content delivery as per LCID
framework
and impart instruction to students.
What needs to be done to offer effective
classroom using blended mode of technology
Hence faculty must be trained to offer
• flipped classroom using technology,
• usage and sharing of learning support resources
• and CLEs for assignments and project work
so that their expertise can be utilized in classroom to
explain concepts or clarifying doubts of learners.
What needs to be done to offer effective
classroom using blended mode of technology
Finally the faculties must be trained to perform learning
analytics to study their students’ learning types.
We must ensure that faculty has not merely mastered
these technology based tools, but trained to create
instructional design too so that they can deliver the
content in blended mode effectively.
