What is DESIGN BRIEF
• The architectural design brief forms the very beginning of the design process.
• A design brief is a descriptive document that contains information about the client,
Project and which explains the client’s requirements for the project.
• It is an essential point of reference not only for the architect, but for all people
involved in the design and implementation of the project.
• The more information we can gain from the client in the early stages of design, the
more effective our decision making and problem solving process will be.
Begin by “brainstorming” and writing down a list of all your thoughts and
ideas about the project. Then start to refine and condense the list and
place your ideas into categories or sub-headings.
• Your design brief should not be too lengthy and should be revised at various
stages throughout the design and construction process and updated if the
scope of works is changing.
• The items / Activities” should be listed first then grade each item in level of
The brief must contain graphical data
importance as you go through the list.
to support the content
• It is helpful to follow and interpret.
• Design briefs are the very beginning of a project, and without one it is incredibly hard for
a project to exist.
• Without a design brief, there is no clear direction and more importantly no record of the
projects components.
• The brief document also essentially provides an informal contract between the client and
architects.
Why is a Design Brief / Important
What is CONNECTION
• Brief identifies the “WHAT” of the design project and Design is the
actual “HOW” in a project.
• A comprehensive, detailed brief eliminates ambiguities in the design
process. It becomes the guiding document in the process and detects
exactly what the designer needs to do and the constraints within which it
has to be done.
What is CONNECTION
• It is a framework/foundation for the designers or any of the projects.
• It contains a wel identified and articulated summary of the key factors
can impact a project
• It focuses on the outcomes of the design and the business objectives
of the design project

Inspiration and Creativity
In 1978, Sony chairman Akio Morita authored a design brief
that concisely asked his design team “…to make something
that lets me listen to opera recordings on long-‐-distance
airplane flights without disturbing passengers around me”.
Sony engineer Nobutoshi Kihara took up
this briefly stated challenge.
The resulting design: the Walkman.
