Instructional scaffolding is a process that provides students with support as they learn new skills or concepts, gradually removing assistance until students can work independently. It involves the teacher modeling the new material, then guiding practice where the teacher and students work together, before having students practice on their own. Effective scaffolding displays four key attributes: explaining and modeling concepts, leading practice, providing examples of expectations, and offering small group instruction.
