Let’s Hear From You
Who is a student/recent graduate?
Who is an international education
veteran?
Hopefuls: Who Are We?
• Excited, motivated, well-traveled, and
unemployed!
• Chances are we learned about
education through study abroad.
• Perhaps we had an internship, but we
are hoping to get our first full-time
job, and with the constant lack of
interest in our skills, we get
frustrated.
#nafsa14
Veterans: Who Are We?
• We are energetic, helpful, and willing to
give advice to anyone who asks.
• We often blame the economic crisis for
lack of jobs in our field, even though
this problem existed long before then.
• Many of us came into the field through
other paths.
#nafsa14
Veterans: Who Are We?
• One size does not fit all. Here is how some veterans got their start:

Tips For International Education Veterans
– We can give the air of being helpful as a colleague.
– We can be easily accessible, rather than seem untouchable as a
school official.
– We could allow students to assist us on a volunteer basis with
parts of our position that could be done by someone else. It’s all
about experience!
#nafsa14
Tips For International Education Veterans
• Why should we do better?
– It would put excitement in your office.
• Put the pep back in your step!
– Those that you assist in the beginning will help you in return
when they become directors and advisors.
– Professionalization of the field prepares young workers to take
over jobs in the future. (After all, you want to retire at some
point!) Remember, it’s not about competition, it’s about
collaboration.

• What can we do better?
– Be persistent.
– Network, even while in college. (By coming up with reasons to
meet people in the field, your network and knowledge base will
grow!)
– Be able to move, even proactively. We’re adventurous!
– Accurately explain your skills: a positive attitude is not enough.
– Create a “Digital Footprint” for yourself.

• Model Practices and Future Trends
– Put yourself in the view of IE veterans.
– Take control of your own job hunt.
– Be mindful of the bigger picture.
– Be proactive.
– Say what you feel has merit, and the ones that are willing to
listen will be your future audience.

Meeting Each Other Halfway
• Collaboration – examples in the field
• Directors care about budgets. Students care about living expenses
and paying back student loans. Can we achieve both (e.g.
government stipends, etc.)?
– School officials are surprised when GAs live in the dorms.
Consider a residence life type position so that basic expenses
are covered.
– What other ideas do you have?
• If not, seek out volunteering opportunities during the wait.

  • #10: Picture and a couple of points – expand on the story. The question: How did you first enter the field of international education?” was sent to the Community Programming and Secuss-L list-serves. We received 44 responses, as noted. Some were categorized twice.
  • #11: Sora Ways to include intl ed hopefuls: -Mural with art students and international students. -Reaching out to underrepresented groups in different ways -Helping with study abroad fairs -Events with businesses and local schools -Collecting anecdotes and stories from study abroad or international student American experiences -Taking time or thinking about mentorship.. What does it mean to be a mentor? -Just as much a responsibility for the office as the volunteer. Oftentimes this can be, just help me take a load off this.
  • #12: Sora Ellen tells story of how she met Tiffany. Sora: Remember that what you see on social media from someone personalized does not necessarily reflect on their professional capacities.
  • #13: Sora (Original pool was 352 postings). Of those, we confirmed 6 percent, not at all scientific. But of those 21 confirmed hires that were advertised , 13 (62%) hires had a bachelor’s degree and 8 (38%) hires had a master’s degree
  • #14: Sora Ellen will mention more poster session ideas. State that will send hand out. Reiterate what we’ve said about the veterans
  • #15: Ellen Eager Super overqualified, still not getting a job Frustration: want to give up on the search, not able to find the tangible opportunities
  • #16: Ellen & Tiffany -Don’t network with each other too much: balance that with spending most of the time with the people who are hiring, not the people who are looking -Skills: a positive attitude is not enough *articulate learning from SA experience, problem solving abilities, -Creating a digital footprint for yourself: LinkedIn, Google,… (Tiffany) Actual visual examples.

  • #20: Ellen, Tiffany, and Sora – what our organizations are doing. Visual examples: “Career Integration with Study Abroad” Collaboration: We all have unique ideas that can contribute to the field. People at all professional levels have things to contribute Examples of collaboration: What can you do as an individual? What can you do as a hiring manager? If not, in the meantime, students should be able to get significant experience in their international office through volunteering. This also benefits the office for all KCs and allows employees to do their jobs more effectively. (Nonprofits, NAFSA,….)
