● Improved User Experience
IMPORTANCE OF THE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
Certification Program Overview
WHY CERTIFICATION PROGRAM IS A KEY COMPONENT OF NFC FORUM?
● Confirms that certified devices are compliant with NFC Forum Technical Specifications
● Contributes to a consistent behavior across the NFC Forum eco-system
and sets the foundation for interoperability
● Offers value for NFC Forum device manufacturers to differentiate their products from
competition
● Is well established since 2012
● Provides certificate recognized by many organizations across the world
WHY CERTIFY?
More information here
CORE ELEMENTS OF CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
1. Clear certification process controlled through documentations and procedures
2. Test cases to verify compliance to the technical specifications
 Test cases have been approved and validated by different stakeholders
3. Approved Test Tools
 Test Tools have successfully completed a validation process at the validation house
4. Authorized Test Laboratories
 Neutral entity providing test services
 Inter Laboratory Comparison Testing (ILCT) procedure to ensure reproducible results in different laboratories
5. NFC Forum Certification Authority a neutral entity to validate the test reports
6. NFC Forum Certification website listing and promoting certified devices

Certification Releases
CERTIFICATION RELEASES
● Certification Release is a group of consistent test cases and process documents
● Certification Release defines different NFC Forum device classes: each supporting a specific set
of features called interoperability modules
 These device classes target to serve different use cases and applications.
 Defined in the Devices Requirements document.
● For each Certification Release, Test Cases documents are grouped in a Test Release
● Product certification is only possible for Active Certification Releases
 When a new Certification Release is published, the NFC Forum provides a grace period up to 18 calendar
months on the previous Certification Release
● After the grace period ends, the expired Certification Release is invalid

IMPROVED USER EXPERIENCE
IMPROVED USER EXPERIENCE
● To give to the users the best NFC user experience
 The intended action is successful from the first attempt.
 The experience is consistent with all devices from the NFC-ecosystem.
● This is achieved when devices can complete transactions with any counter
part from the NFC-ecosystem. How certification helps it?
1. Analog testing: Robust communication in the operating volume between
different antenna sizes.
2. Digital testing: Robust data exchange on protocol level.
3. Tag performance testing: Robust data exchange in the operating volume.
 These enable the execution of NDEF application and enable interoperability
within NFC-ecosystem.
 A certified device provides an improved user experience

  • 24. NFC Certification Testing Be prepared for NFC Testing (I) Be an NFC Forum member 24 What is needed in order to run NFC Forum Testing?  The device has to support the features defined in the applicable NFC Forum Device Requirements  Complete Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) available in the current Certification Release. This information may be provided also using the test tool specific template.  Complete Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (IXIT) available in the current Certification Release. This information may be provided also using the test tool specific template.  The device has to be provided together with the SW needed to test all the functionalities. From June 2015 this SW must follow NFC Forum Device Test Application (DTA) specification. This is not applicable to Tag or Card Emulation Devices. Webinar - NFC Forum Certification Testing with DEKRA

  • 30. WHAT THIS OVERVIEW WILL COVER ● Importance of the Certification Program  Certification Program Overview  Product Certification  Certification Releases ● Improved User Experience
  • 31. IMPORTANCE OF THE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Certification Program Overview
  • 32. WHY CERTIFICATION PROGRAM IS A KEY COMPONENT OF NFC FORUM? ● Confirms that certified devices are compliant with NFC Forum Technical Specifications ● Contributes to a consistent behavior across the NFC Forum eco-system and sets the foundation for interoperability ● Offers value for NFC Forum device manufacturers to differentiate their products from competition ● Is well established since 2012 ● Provides certificate recognized by many organizations across the world
  • 34. CORE ELEMENTS OF CERTIFICATION PROGRAM 1. Clear certification process controlled through documentations and procedures 2. Test cases to verify compliance to the technical specifications  Test cases have been approved and validated by different stakeholders 3. Approved Test Tools  Test Tools have successfully completed a validation process at the validation house 4. Authorized Test Laboratories  Neutral entity providing test services  Inter Laboratory Comparison Testing (ILCT) procedure to ensure reproducible results in different laboratories 5. NFC Forum Certification Authority a neutral entity to validate the test reports 6. NFC Forum Certification website listing and promoting certified devices

  • 40. IMPORTANCE OF THE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Certification Releases
  • 41. CERTIFICATION RELEASES ● Certification Release is a group of consistent test cases and process documents ● Certification Release defines different NFC Forum device classes: each supporting a specific set of features called interoperability modules  These device classes target to serve different use cases and applications.  Defined in the Devices Requirements document. ● For each Certification Release, Test Cases documents are grouped in a Test Release ● Product certification is only possible for Active Certification Releases  When a new Certification Release is published, the NFC Forum provides a grace period up to 18 calendar months on the previous Certification Release ● After the grace period ends, the expired Certification Release is invalid

  • 44. IMPROVED USER EXPERIENCE ● To give to the users the best NFC user experience  The intended action is successful from the first attempt.  The experience is consistent with all devices from the NFC-ecosystem. ● This is achieved when devices can complete transactions with any counter part from the NFC-ecosystem. How certification helps it? 1. Analog testing: Robust communication in the operating volume between different antenna sizes. 2. Digital testing: Robust data exchange on protocol level. 3. Tag performance testing: Robust data exchange in the operating volume.  These enable the execution of NDEF application and enable interoperability within NFC-ecosystem.  A certified device provides an improved user experience Z axis r axis Reference Mark Landing Plane 5mm 5 mm 10 mm NFC Forum compliance Operating Volume
