Referencing the APA Way
What is referencing and why
do we do it?
• Referencing is an acknowledgement of the sources and the
individuals responsible for those sources that have informed
us on our subject and helped us formulate our opinion on the
subject.
• The laws of Australia and internationally, protect intellectual
Property as well as material property under copyright
legislation.
When and where do you
reference?
• In-text – You add an abridged citation immediately
after the quote or paraphrase of a writer’s work.
• Bibliography – You make a list in alphabetical order,
of all the resources, using full citations, at the end of
your assignment.
How do you do it?
• If you have a Mac computer:
• Step 1: Open a Word document
• Step 2: Click on the tab Document Elements
• Step 3: Go to References and make sure the drop down menu at
• the top is on APA . Click on Manage , a box should appear
• Step 4: Click on the cross at the bottom of the box and choose your type
of source, Book / web site will be the most likely.
• Step 5: Fill in as many of the areas as you can but particularly the ones
with an asterisk.
• Step 6: Press OK and immediately the in-text citation will appear in your
text but you can retrieve it again by placing your cursor where you want
it to appear in your text, click on Manage, choosing the resource from
the list which appears in the box and double clicking on the resource. It
should appear embedded in the text.
• Step 7 : To generate a bibliography at the end of the assignment ,
click on the Bibliography image and it will give you the choice to
download the whole bibliography by clicking on Works Cited.
If you have a Windows Computer:
1. Open a Word document
2. Click on the tab References
3. Make sure the drop down menu at the top is APA
4. Click on Manage Sources - a box should appear
5. Click NEW at the center of the box and another box will open.
6. Choose the type of source - Book/web site will be the most likely.
7. Fill in the details of your information in the bibliographic fields
provided
8. Press OK and you will see a master list of your sources and a
preview of how the reference will appear in your text and in your
bibliography
9. To insert a reference in your work click Insert Citation and a drop
down menu of your sources will appear (you can add to the list
from here too). Simply click the one you want to use.
