Industry drivers
• Tasks that can be most automated are
cheap for human labor to perform
• This makes robot economics challenging
(might as well use humans instead of
machines)
• Therefore, rather than labor replacement,
robot adoption seems to be driven by:
• Workers safety (i.e. remote demolitions,
remote inspections)
• Efficiency (i.e. real time surveying,
continuous paving, etc)
• Pushing the boundaries (i.e. mass tiling,
contour crafting, etc)

structures.

Drilling
The robot provides accurate,
efficient drilling in concrete
ceilings and promises far less
strain on workers.

Mass Tiling
Robotic production of tiling work.
Allows for the existence of tiles
with unprecedented detail.
Otherwise these tiles would be
economically unfeasible.

Inspection
Non-destructive technical
diagnostics of bridges, tunnels and
other structures.

Exosuits
Exosuits and exoskeletons help
construction workers handle
heavier loads without hurting their
bodies.

Prefabricated
Robots manufacture prefab parts
of buildings. In this case, the
panels are designed within spatial
constraints of the robot.

Recycling
Robots help sort construction
materials and waste for easier
recycling.

Autonomous trucks
Autonomous trucks are being
developed to increase safety in
construction areas.

“Contour Crafting (CC) is a layered fabrication
technology developed by Dr. Behrokh
Khoshnevis of the University of Southern
California. Contour Crafting technology has
great potential for automating the
construction of whole structures as well as
sub-components. Using this process, a single
house or a colony of houses, each with
possibly a different design, may be
automatically constructed in a single run,
embedded in each house all the conduits for
electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning”
