“ All students in Goole High school will make outstanding progress, within lessons that are both engaging and creative, but focused upon progress, within an environment that is rigorous and organized. “ Is this your classroom?
Context T4LP Training Thursday Wednesday “ The vision for T4LP – the big picture” “ Medium Term Outcome Planning.” Friday “ Planning the Outstanding Lesson.”
Outcomes Staff able to write effective and clearly measurable outcomes. Staff able to break down their GCSE qualification into the key skills and content required. Staff able to assign key skills and content to 5 year cycle blocks to show long term progress.
“ All students in Goole High school will make outstanding progress, within lessons that are both engaging and creative, but focused upon progress, within an environment that is rigorous and organized. “
“ The Big Picture” T4LP Data Driven instruction (What we teach, When we teach it) GHS Challenges (How we teach it)
Why must we plan long term? “ For a high performing school…..plan short medium and long term. Effort put into preparation and planning yields considerable dividends downstream.” Alistair Smith “ High Performers – the Secrets of Successful Schools” "He who fails to plan is planning to fail" Winston Churchill
Why are Outcomes so important? “ Learning outcomes help instructors more precisely to tell students what is expected of them. By doing this, educationalists assert that they…..: help students learn more effectively….. help instructors to design their materials more effectively ….. help instructors select the appropriate teaching strategy….. help instructors more precisely to tell their colleagues what a particular activity is designed to achieve.” - Alan Jenkins (Oxford Brookes University) & Dave Unwin (Birkbeck College London) Observation data.
Effective Outcomes Why do we need them? What are they? How many do I need? What is an effective outcome? How do we make them measurable? How do they show levels of challenge? Where do we find them?
Which are the most effective outcomes? Set A Plot a line using a set of coordinates. (E) Identify a missing point to complete a 2D shape using coordinates. (D) Describe accurately how to complete coordinate problems. (C) Set B Do exercises 12a-14c on plotting lines. Finish a 2d shape. Understand how to do coordinate problems. Why?
The Task Taking your end qualification for your subject – break it down into the outcomes required. Then assign these outcomes, and the skills and contents leading up to them, to create a five year plan of how to prepare our students for that qualification.
Extension Should you finish the five year plan with time to spare: Tomorrow we will be medium term planning year 10. Cycle outcomes will need to be broken down into weekly sets of outcomes.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: This will be on projector as staff enter the hall – staff will be asked to discuss the statement and how it relates to their lessons.
  • #3: The context of the session will be put into focus – talking about the progression from big picture to medium term planning to lesson planning.
  • #4: Outcomes of today’s session introduced to staff.
  • #5: My vision will be introduced as the goal of the T4LP systems and work, and what all the systems are based around.
  • #6: In terms of T4LP DDI and the challenges will be linked as shown above, and the importance of DDI reinforced as the way in which we need to decide when we teach what we teach, and the challenges as the strategies of how we do it!
  • #7: Here I will speak of the importance of long term planning. Quotes used to add weight to the importance of the long term planning.
  • #8: At this point I will also refer to data from observation to show why it is important to have clear outcomes.
  • #9: I will briefly summarise the stimuli material – to ensure that everybody is aware of what is required. This recap is required as not all subjects covered it this Monday.
  • #10: This will be on board as staff enter for them to discuss.
  • #11: Faculty time task introduced, then Wendy introduced to explain how and in what format to do it. Task submitted to me by end of day for quality assurance.
  • #12: This will be presented to staff as what to do if they finish early.
