Technology Use vs. Technology Integration Emily Evans
Technology in the Classroom Technology is an extremely important part of the lives of many Americans today Much of society relies on the uses of technology in personal and professional lives Therefore technology is becoming more and more apparent to today’s classrooms It is important for students to become familiar with technology as they enter our techolgically advanced and dependant society
Technology Use Traditionally technology has been used as a tool to “tutor” students and “teach” them how to do something This limits students’ interaction with technology and gives control to the computer or machine rather than the student In the past technology use was used as a tool in order to assess whether a student is correct and instructing them on what to do to improve These enables the technology to “teach” the student
Is this the most effective way? The alternative… Technology Integration…
What Do We Mean by Technology Integration? According to the National Forum on Education Statisics (2005)Technology integration, as “the incorporation of technology resources and technology-based practices into the daily routines, work, and management of schools"
Technology Integration Instead of relying on the technology to “do all the work” “students should learn with and not from the technology” (Jonassen, 1998). This encourages students to think about what they know in different ways and provides opportunity for reasoning and abstract thinking
Through Technology Integration Students Should: Create original works to show expression Use models and simulation to explore complex issues Interact, collaborate, and communicate with others Organize, analyize and evaluate information from a variety of media Research, solve problems, and make projects using a variety of digital tools
Technology as Mindtools for Meaningful Learning “ Student cannot use technology Mindtools as learning strategies without thinking deeply about what they are studying” (Jonassen, 1998). There are several different effective mindtools including: semantic organizational mindtools, databases, semantic networking, spreadsheets, microworlds, etc. Mindtools do not make learning easier, but encourage the learner to think harder about what they are viewing on a deeper level
Examples of Technology Use In the past students have used traditional computer software program that do not engage their learning An example of this: Mavis Beacon A program that enables students to electronically learn to type on a keyboard This programs expects the student to type letters on a the keyboard at a certain rate and then are assessed on their typing ability Engaging for a student?....No!
Examples of Technology Integration Interactive Whiteboards: digital screens that enable both teacher and students to actively visualize a presentation or activity in front of the classroom. The board has the ability to make additions and save documents and presentations for future use Inspiration and Kidspiration programs: a software that allows both teachers and student to create graphic organizer used for various activities and technology projects in the classroom Engaging…Yes!
Which is more effective, Technology Use or Technology Integration? …Technology Integration of course!
