Journal of the American Society for Information Science November 1980 Adopted for the Subject MALIT 216 : Information Networks and Resource Sharing by Yvonnie B. Canol
The Technology of Library and Information Networks Types of Networks 1. Search Service Networks - provide multiple databases or files to search - users search one file at a time and print the results of the search on their local terminal printer during the search process. - do not provide the ability for users to modify the records in the files nor modify the output.
The Technology of Library and Information Networks Types of Networks 2. Customized Service Networks - provide bibliographic files for users to search, modify records for their own local use and obtain a variety of printed and machine readable products showing their localized data. Types: a. “Cataloging” networks- (OCLC, RLIN) b. Circulation networks
The Technology of Library and Information Networks Types of Networks 3. Service Center Networks - it is an organization rather than an online network and does not provide automated services directly. - are the people side of the networks in the sense of training, consulting, installation and planning for a large group of libraries.
The Technology of Library and Information Networks Technology of Networks 1. Centralized Networks - central computer plus central files are accessed by all terminals on the network . 2. Distributed Networks - computers (hosts) and their associated files are distributed throughout the network.
The Technology of Library and Information Networks Network Limitations Limitations Today’s Solution Impact of Solutions A. Terminals not compatible between networks Use multiple terminals $2000 to $4000 each B. Communication lines not compatible -dedicated lines not shared between networks -VAN lines not efficient -Dial-up lines very expensive Use different or redundant transmission of services Pay redundant line costs -Higher costs -Slower response time C. Network user language not compatible Learn all required languages Human limits to memory Multiple training costs D. Files and records not compatible Convert to tape Mail to users Reconvert to new file -circulation files -union catalog Added development costs Time delay for information transfer
The Technology of Library and Information Networks 1. There will be a continual array of new service and product offerings. 2. Many of these offerings will have a significant impact on the services offered by libraries and the form of these services. 3. Vendors of particular service, such as circulation or cataloging, will expand their services to other areas with high overlap of services between vendors of different services. 5. Interfaces of stand-alone systems into “subnetworks,” which in turn will become larger networks and eventually part of the “national network” will continue throughout the 1980’s. 4. Vendors of different services are building interfaces between their services, sometimes creating new services. New Trends in Networking
The Technology of Library and Information Networks New Trends in Networking 6. Online networks are considering offering services normally considered stand-alone, such as circulation, serials check-in, local online catalogs, and regional ILL. 7. Planning of network services among users will improve as more clearly defined and technically reasonable requirements, schedules, and priorities are generated and documented. 8. As technology continues to improve in power and decrease in cost, there will be additional activities supported at the regional and local library levels. 9. The “national database” will not be a single database but rather a highly distributed and hierarchical network of databases.
The Technology of Library and Information Networks Conclusion: - As more services involving the transfer and exchange of information about the library material become available, online networks will become an integral part of the environment. - New innovative services will continue to be introduced and in turn be offered as new services directly to the library patron or indirectly on behalf of the patron.
Thank You!!!
