Theory of Design
Theory of Design
Unity is the principle of design that unifies all other
principles within a piece of work, allowing each individual
element to coexist with one another to form an aesthetically
pleasing design.
UNITY
ORDER
Order refers not only to geometric regularity, but to a condition in which parts of a whole relate to
other parts in a harmonious way
Design Order can be achieved in many ways using any of the following principles: Axis, Symmetry,
Hierarchy, Datum, Repetition, Rhythm, Transformation … etc.
ORDER helps us to organize things logically- so that they make sense.
PROPORTION
Proportion is the relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they
compare with one another. Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct
relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity.
Good proportion adds harmony, symmetry, or balance among the parts of a design.
FORM AND SHAPE
Shape builds on line and color, as it has to be made of one or both of these. Shape is
the property of a two-dimensional form, usually defined by a line around it or by a
change in color.
In visual design, form is described as the way an artist arranges elements in the entirety of a
composition. It may also be described as any three-dimensional object. Form can be measured, from
top to bottom (height), side to side (width), and from back to front (depth). Form is also defined by light
and dark.
SOLID AND VOID
Solids depend on the form or shape of things, and how these are
perceived. Solids are realized by the bounce back, while voids are for diffusion of
energy.
As a principle of art, contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite
elements and effects. For example, light and dark colors, smooth and rough
textures, large and small shapes
 Emphasis
Emphasis is a strategy that aims to draw the viewer's
attention to a specific design element. That could be to an
area of content, to an image, to a link, or to a button, etc.
Harmony is the visually satisfying effect of combining
similar or related elements. Harmony in a painting
or design helps bring about unity.
Rhythm is a principle of design that suggests movement or
action. Rhythm is usually achieved through repetition of lines, shapes,
colors, and more. It creates a visual tempo in artworks and provides a path
for the viewer's eye to follow
