Types of communications
On the basis of Parties
Internal Communication
Internal communication is the
transmission of information between
organizational members or parts of the
organization. It takes place across all
levels and organizational units of an
organization.
External Communication
External communication is the
transmission of information between a
business and another person or entity
in the company's external environment.
Vertical communication in an organization is communication that flows up and
down through the organization's hierarchical structure, from the general workforce up
through middle management and higher management and back down again.
Upward
communication
is the process of
information flowing
from the lower levels of
a hierarchy to the upper
levels.
Downward
communication
is the flow of
information and
messages from a higher
level inside an
organization to a lower
one.
Diagonal
communication
is the sharing of
information among
different structural levels
within an organization.
Horizontal communication refers to the flow of messages across
functional areas on the same level of an organization.
On the basis of Formality
Formal Communication
Formal communication is a system of
passing messages and information
between positions within an
organization through officially
designated channels
Informal Communication
Informal Communication is the casual
and unofficial form of communication
wherein the information is exchanged
spontaneously between two or more
persons.
On the basis of Media
Written communication involves any type of message that makes use of
the written word. Written communication is the most important and the most effective of
any mode of business communication.
Verbal Communication is the sharing of information between individuals by
using speech.
Nonverbal Communication has been defined as communication without words.
It includes apparent behaviours such as facial expressions, eyes, touching, and tone
of voice, as well as less obvious messages such as dress, posture and spatial distance
between two or more people.
Mass communication is the imparting or exchanging of information on a large scale
to a wide range of people.
Personal communications may include private letters, memos, some electronic
communications (like e-mails), personal interviews, and telephone conversations.
Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange
information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages.
* It is face-to-face communication..
