Premechanical Age– 3000 B.C. to 1450 A.D.  Writing, Alphabets, Paper and Pens, Books and Libraries, Numbering System, Abacus Mechanical Age – 1450 to  1840 Metal type printing process, General Purpose Computers, Slide Rules, Punch Card Electromechanical Age – 1840 – 1940 The beginnings of telecommunication.  Knowledge and information could now be converted into electrical impulses. Telegraph, Telephone and Radio Electronic Age – 1940 to Present Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) – 1 st  high speed computer. 1 st  General Purpose Commercial Computer - Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC) Generations - 1 st - Tubes, 2 nd  – Transistors, 3 rd  – Integrated Circuits + Operating Systems,  4 th  – Microprocessors and Languages (MS-DOS to Windows) , GUI
Pre-scientific revolution:  The prehistory of modern engineering features ancient master builders and Renaissance engineers such as Leonardo da Vinci.  Industrial revolution:  From the eighteenth through early nineteenth century, civil and mechanical engineers changed from practical artists to scientific professionals.  Second industrial revolution:  In the century before World War II, chemical, electrical, and other science-based engineering branches developed electricity, telecommunications, cars, airplanes, and mass production.  Information revolution:  As engineering science matured after the war, microelectronics, computers, and telecommunications jointly produced information technology.
 
Bill Gates predicts software revolution. Underestimated changes Natural User Interface (NUI)  The future will encompass all the new interaction techniques such as touch and speech. Software-driven world The former Microsoft Chief maintained that programs will drive every part of human life.
 
Design a curriculum to include technical courses. For example - Understanding Engineers at LER. Develop HR professional that understand engineers. How do you do business with people you don’t understand? To create environments where engineers don’t feel constrained by a market driven by consumers. Today’s technology more than ever are driven by consumer demand. Recruiting the “right” engineers. Growing/Developing the talent we need.
Name? Degree? Why Engineering?  Does the Engineering curriculum meet expectations today? Is it cutting edge or same thing taught 20 yrs ago? Are professors cutting edge?  Is there conflict between what engineers want and what business wants? Your plans for staying in the field or moving into management? How can HR help engineers be more successful in recruitment, integration/on boarding within business environment and advancement/promotion within business environment?
