Background on Rubrics
Definition of a Rubric
• “A rubric is an assessment tool listing evaluation criteria for an
assignment. A rubric divides the assigned work into parts and
provides clear descriptions of the characteristics of the work
associated with each part, at varying levels of skill.”

Purpose of Rubrics
• Rubrics are a useful tool in the assessment of student work
• Communicates assignment requirements
• Provide clarity of expectations for student performance standards
• Scoring tool listing levels of quality and point values for each
performance criteria
• Gives students a detailed evaluation with informative feedback and
not just a score
• Helps ensure consistent and impartial grading
