How it work? • Access to ORCID services is based on transparent and non- discriminatory terms posted on the ORCID website. • Researchers are able to create, edit, and maintain an ORCID identifier and record free of charge. • Researchers can control the defined privacy settings of their own ORCID record data.

How it work? • All data contributed to ORCID by researchers or claimed by them is available in standard formats for free download (subject to the researchers’ own privacy settings) that are updated once a year and released under a CC0 waiver. • All software developed by ORCID is publicly released under an Open Source Software license approved by the Open Source Initiative. For the software it adopts, ORCID will prefer Open Source.

- 13. ORCID with ‘X’ at the end • ORCID identifiers that end in X are valid and correct. • ORCID identifiers are all randomly assigned and cannot be changed. The last character in an ORCID identifier is a checksum. It ranges in values from “0” – “10,” with X representing the value “10.” The checksum ensures the other 15 digits of your identifier form a coherent iD.

This is the recommended process because it reduces or eliminates errors, and enables a reliable connection between your ORCID iD and your works 2. Add works using an identifier 3.
