 Learning Curves
 Different types of learning curves
 Characteristics of a learning curves
 Uses of learning curve
LEARNING CURVES
 A learning curve is a graphical representation of
how learning takes place in a particular situation.
 It is a graph plotting the course of learning in which
X-axis represents some measures of practice ,
units of time , number of trails while Y-axis plots a
measure of proficiency or accomplishment ,
material retained ,puzzles solved etc.
 A learning curve depicts the rate of improvement in
various learning situation.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEARNING CURVES
 Straight line learning curve.
 Negative accelerated learning curve or Convex
curve.
 Positively accelerated learning curve or Concave
curve.
 Combination type of curve or concave – convex
curve.
STRAIGHT LINE LEARNING CURVE
 Such a curve shows a constant or uniform rate of
progress in learning.
 Performance is directly proportional to the number
of practice trials
NEGATIVE ACCELERATED LEARNING
CURVE OR CONVEX CURVE.
 It is a negatively accelerated curve which shows
rapid initial improvement in learning that shows
down with time.
 Good early performance but poorer performances
in later trials
POSITIVELY ACCELERATED LEARNING
CURVE OR CONCAVE CURVE
 It is positively accelerated curve which shows slow
initial improvement in learning that increases with
time ultimately learning towards the mastery over
the learning material.
COMBINATION TYPE OF CURVE OR CONCAVE –
CONVEX CURVE.
 It is a S – Shaped learning curve forming by the
combination of a concave and convex curve
depending on rapid or slow initial success followed
by a reverse condition in learning.
LEARNING PLATEAUS
 Defining the term plateau , Woodworth and Marquis
– “ Along flat stretch in the learning curve , a long
period of almost no improvement , picturesquely
called a plateau, provided it is followed by more
improvement.
 A plateau in the learning curve represents a
stationary stage where apparently no progress in
the learning is recorded
CAUSES OF LEARNING PLATEAU
 Poor or faulty method of teaching
 Physical as well as mental fatigue
 Lack of proper motivation
 Too much difficulty and complexity of the task
 Conflict of previous learning with new learning
 Mental or physical illness
 Poor and unfavorable environment for learning
 Lack of attention
ELIMINATION OF LEARNING PLATEAU
 Adopting effective methods of teaching
 Acquainting the learner with clear – cut goals or
aims of the work in hand
 Arousing and maintaining interest in learning
 Arranging learning material according to the
increasing level of difficulty or complexity
 Suggesting the learner to discontinue for the time
being when a period of no improvement is reached
 Minimizing the distracting factors present in the
learning environment
 Providing sufficient motivation and incentive
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEARNING CURVES
 A learning curve have the unique characteristics or
initial improvement no matter whether it is rapid or
slow till a somewhat uniform rate of improvement is
achieved.
 In the learning curve we rarely find a straight line
path ( there must be various ups and downs)
 The final stage in the learning curve is reached
when one reaches to a point beyond which little
learning or say no learning takes place after
repeated trails or continuous practice
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEARNING CURVES
 In the beginning and end there comes a stage or
stages in learning where there seems to be no
growth or improvement . It is stationary stage or
plateau (flat portion ) in a learning curve.
 After passing the stationary stage or plateau the
learning curve again shows some improvement and
with some ups and downs advances towards the
point of maximum learning
USES OF LEARNING CURVE
Learning curve help teacher
 Acquaint himself with the individual differences in
learning among his students
 To improve the methods of teaching
 Provides the opportunity of self appraisal
 To understand the emotional life and other personality
characteristics of the leaner
 Helps to select appropriate teaching aids.
 Helps to maintain proper account of the regular progress
of the students.
 Helps to compare the progress of students
