Rebranding:
Changing It Up for Greater Success
My Journey to Meagan Gets Real
• I started out as Publix Coupon Queen
• More Than a Coupon Queen came next
• More Than a Homeschool Mom came after that.
• Meagan Gets Real came from a need for a pivot and a more authentic
brand. I had to let go of brands that no longer fit my stage of life and
prepare for the next steps.
Should you rebrand?
• If you are in here you are probably considering a rebrand. Let’s
discuss a few things to ask yourself before planning a rebrand.
• Why do you really want to rebrand? This is a really important
question. Your why needs to be relevant to your next steps or you will
struggle with a rebrand.
• Do you have enough content to rebrand or should you start over?
Sometimes instead of a rebrand you really need a new beginning.
Let’s Prepare for your Rebrand!
• Is it SEO friendly? – When choosing your new site name, keep SEO in
mind. It will help you in the long run.
• Are the social handles available? – Take some time and go to every
single social platform and see if the handles for that name are
available. (Don’t change things yet though.)
• Is the domain available? Spend some time on your favorite domain
purchasing site and make sure your domain is available. Go a step
further and make sure there aren’t slight variations of it that could
cause you trouble later on.
What’s in a name?
What about the money?
• Site Design – If you are changing up your site to fit the new brand you will
address pricing with this. It will depend on who does it and how much you
change.
• New Domain
• Hosting – Talk to your host. Mine was able to migrate things for me
seamlessly without extra costs.
• Logos/Business Cards/Branding – You can design a new logo for yourself for
free or you can hire it out. This can be as simple as $5 on fiverr or more on
other sites. Look at what you can afford and the quality you want.
• TIME TIME TIME – This is a time consuming process. To rebrand well you
will have to slow down to go fast later. Don’t be surprised if it takes a while!
Expenses with a Rebrand
What about socials?
• Planning to keep your current social followers? Start the rebrand
conversation before you ever rebrand. Prepare people for a new
direction by slowly working in some of your new content within your
current socials.
• Transitioning your social handles/names – Most social platforms will
let you change your name. The big exception is Facebook. Facebook is
a lot more picky about how you will change your name. It will start
with simple changes. So I was More Than a Homeschool Mom. I
changed it to More Than a Real Homeschool Mom. Then I waited a
week. Next was Meagan More Than a Real Homeschool Mom. It took
me about a month to transition it to where I wanted to go. Try to go
too fast and you will get penalized.
What about SEO?
• Before you ever launch your rebrand, spend some time researching keywords and
look at where you will want to rank for the new brand. If you are moving to a new
niche this becomes even more important.
• Make sure your new site has an HTTPS so you are not flagged as not secure.
• Make sure you have your host park your old domain so that it will reroute all
content from the old site to the new one.
• Set up the new site with webmaster tools and submit it for indexing. Give Google
a chance to crawl the new site.
• Don’t go crazy deleting old posts. Take some time to look through your old
content and see what can be repurposed for the new brand. If you delete
something or change the main link, make sure to put in a redirect for that link.
**Disclaimer – I am not an SEO expert! I can only speak from experience.
What about preparing in advance?
• Plan a content calendar. – Take some time and work on a content
calendar. With a rebrand it can help to have a clear direction as to
where you are going.
• Work ahead. – Take a week or two where you focus on content for
the new brand. Spending some time working ahead can prepare you
to be less stressed when starting the new brand.
• Spend a great deal of time on hashtag and social research. – You
might be moving into a new niche or a new site. Make sure to take
some time researching what the normal options are with that site.
What comes next?
• Update all of your influencer networks. – You will need to update
things to reflect the new branding.
• Send an email to reps and brands that you work with. – Be honest
with brands you work with on an ongoing basis about your move to a
new brand. It helps if they understand the new direction you are
going in.
• Have realistic expectations – You might see a dip or drop off in the
beginning. The goal is to set yourself up with a brand you can thrive
with in the long term.
Launching the new brand
• Have a realistic game plan in mind for how you will launch. Will you
be running a special giveaway, social promotion, or discount code to
commemorate the new brand?
• How will you roll out new content and new branding?
• How can your friends help you launch the new brand? Can you work
with them on a brand launch celebration? Can they help get some of
your new content out? Can they share about the rebrand?
3 Simple Takeaways
• The rebrand process starts the second you decide to rebrand!
• Make sure you can say about the new brand, “My name is XYZ and I
am (Insert brand name here.)
• Planning ahead will save you a great deal of time when you launch
the new brand.
