Introduction
This is an individual assignment which will work on the basic application of building services. Students are introduced
to the four (4) major types of services available, which are essential to make a building function. Each student will be
assigned to design the systems required from a building plan given. Firstly, they need to understand how systems in
building services work and later apply them by drawing the systems in the plans.
Objectives of Project
1. To develop students’ understanding and knowledge of building services and its systems in design and
construction.
2. To apply appropriate building services systems and solution for a specific design.
3. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the
design in response to practical considerations.
4. To develop students’ ability to resolve issues related to specific building services systems.
Learning Outcomes of this Project
Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to:
1. Identify relevant systems related to water supply, electrical supply, sewage and storm water management.
2. Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.
3. Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.
Building Services (BLD 60903/ARC 2423): August 2016 2
Tasks - Methodology
Students will be given a building plan to work with. They are expected to demonstrate their understanding of building
services by proposing and designing appropriate systems for the building which include:
i) electrical supply system
ii) cold water and hot water supply system
iii) sewage and sanitary system
iv) storm water and drainage system
Roof plan will need to be established from the floor plan given. Students may choose from these types of pitched roof
available:
This assignment will require drawings and diagrams that include specifications, symbols, legends, images, texts and
whichever information deem relevant to describe the planning and installation of all the building services learnt.
Additionally, students may also quote specific clauses from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) 1984 or other relevant
Acts, Laws or guidelines which relate to the proposed systems into their presentation boards.
Submission Requirement
1. Drawings and diagrams are to be presented in 2 sheets of A2 size paper (landscape orientation) which
include the following:
- Floor Plan: Integration of sewage, sanitary and drainage system (scale 1:100), assumed boundary
- Reflected Ceiling Plan: Electrical layout (scale 1:100)
- Roof Plan: Storm water system (scale 1:100), pitched roof
- Schematic diagram: Cold, hot water supply, sewage and sanitary system (Not to Scale)
2. Adequate specifications, legends, images and whatsoever information that are relevant.
3. Images and descriptions of equipment or component used.
4. Formatting to include student’s name, student ID and name of tutor in-charge (title block).
5. References.
** Drawings in Sketch-Up or ACAD format.
*** Submission of A2 sheets in a (1) plastic envelope.
Assessment criteria
The assessment for this assignment will be based on the following:
 Quality of drawings, diagrams and images for each building services system including appropriate drawing
standards and conventions.
 Clarity of descriptions and specifications of all building services components.
 Understanding of the project and all related building services systems.
