The smart grid is a network created by combining information technology, communication technology, and electrical power systems which allows two-way digital communication between suppliers and consumers. It monitors power supply and usage. Key features include improved reliability through self-healing of outages without technicians, flexibility to handle bi-directional power flows from distributed generation, and greater efficiency including demand-side management. Smart grids differ from classical grids in their ability to more efficiently manage peak loads through automation and demand response as well as integrate distributed generation and cogeneration. Smart meters are a key component used in smart grid technology to monitor usage.

Where Classic grids were designed for one-way flow of electricity, but if a local sub-network generates more power than it is consuming, the reverse flow can raise safety and reliability issues. where A smart grid aims to manage these issues.
