TECHNICAL ENGLISH
 Technical writing in English is a specific
writing for a specific audience.
 It fulfills the specific needs of the students
in their practical life in future
 It is audience’s centered and practical in
nature.
INTRODUCTION TO
TECHNICAL WRITING
OBJECTIVES
 After going through this unit, students will be able
to:
 1. Explain technical writing and its purposes.
 2. Differentiate among different types of technical
documents.
 3. Describe technical readers.
 4. Discuss technical writing approaches.
Purpose
 Accurate, concise and objective based message.
 Factual and Impersonal
 For use of professionals like engineers, scientists,
and technicians
 Direct, simple, and clear communication.
AUDIENCE AND
COMMUNICATION
 Technical Readers :Enough knowledge about the
content
 Managerial Readers : Do not need the technical
detail and depth
 General Readers. Least technical knowledge and
understanding of particular subject
EXPRESSING
VERSUS

THE TECHNICAL WRITING APPROACH
 SHORTER SENTENCES :
 Only carry what you need and not a bit more.
 Never allow sentences to become more complicated than is
absolutely necessary

SUPPRESSED VERBS
 Turning a verb into a noun suppresses the verb's ability
to act
 active verbs are turned into nouns and used with state-
